Program Description

The University
A top research institution, James Cook University (JCU) is Australia’s leading tropical university and has an international reputation for its expertise in marine biology, environmental health and agriculture. With first-class facilities, highly regarded faculty and courses focused on discovery, the program offers two campuses: the main JCU campus in Townsville, and the smaller Cairns campus, which is ideally suited for students interested in specializing in rainforest studies. Students with interest in hands-on courses, such as coral reef ecology, must meet course pre-requisites, including statistics and basic ecology.

The Surrounding Area
JCU is located in a region to which visitors from all over the world travel each year to experience the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and World Heritage-listed rainforests. With its emphasis on outdoor activities, the surrounding areas offer many activities to visitors and residents, including scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing, and hiking.

Much of the city’s recreational activity occurs along the landscaped Strand (approx. 10-15 minutes from the university), featuring beaches, cafés and views across the bay. With an average of 320 days of sunshine each year, the city offers an active cultural life with superb art galleries, museums and music venues.

JCU’s Cairns campus is situated in a uniquely tropical setting nestled into rainforest-clad hills. The campus is minutes from the Wet Tropics rainforests and just over an hour from the Great Barrier Reef. City dwellers enjoy a cosmopolitan lifestyle with excellent sporting and recreational activities.
