Program Description

The University
UNCW in Portugal is in the colorful city of Lisbon, and students will take courses at the Instituto Universitario de Lisboa (ISCTE). This university, which is AACSB accredited, has been around since 1972 and has 9,000 undergraduate students. ISCTE is one of the most dynamic and innovative universities in Portugal and has maintained full-capacity since its creation. The Foundation for Science and Technology recognizes this university as a research university, and ISCTE encourages students to embrace their potential while developing their capability for initiative and flexibility when it comes to academics.

The Surrounding Area
Study abroad in one of Europe’s most beautiful and historically important capital cities — Lisbon, Portugal! CNN recently reported that Lisbon might be “Europe’s coolest city” and, in 2012, Lisbon was named European City of the Year. In 2014, the nearby city of Porto, was named the European Destination of the Year.

Lisbon has it all! As the capital of Portugal, Lisbon is packed with unparalleled, unique cultural and historic sites. It has a vibrant arts and music scene, great food, exceptional nightlife, award-winning beaches and, best of all, it is ranked as one of the most affordable and safest of European cities.

Lisbon has many personalities — though steeped in Old-World tradition, the city is also known for cutting edge fashion and design. Once the hub of a bygone global empire that stretched across four continents, Lisbon has a flavor all its own, influenced by former colonies in Africa, Brazil, India, China, the Persian Gulf and the Indonesian spice islands.

Student Life
UNCW in Portugal offers cultural activities and excursions to places such as Belem, Lagos, Mafra & Ericeira, Porto and Sintra. The program also provides opportunities for students to explore the beautiful coastal capital of Portugal. Students can visit the Aqueduto de Aguas Livres, Torre de Belem and the Time Out Market Lisboa (formerly Mercado da Ribiera). Students can also visit one of the many beaches that are in Lisbon.
