Program Description

The University
Located a 25-minute train ride from the heart of London, the University of Hertfordshire (UH) is a vibrant multicultural campus community with more than 2,000 international students choosing to study there each year. Hertfordshire boasts courses that are up to date, relevant and responsive to the needs of its students. Faculty members are committed to helping students achieve their full potential by utilizing state-of-the-art facilities that support blended learning, which combines the best of traditional teaching with the latest technology.

The Surrounding Area
Hatfield is located just 25 minutes outside of Central London. The center of culture in the U.K., London offers students the opportunity to enjoy a multitude of attractions for free, including The British Museum, The Natural History Museum, The Science Museum, the National Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery, Tate Modern and Tate Britain. There are 143 registered parks and gardens in London, with green spaces accounting for thirty percent of the city’s area. Hertfordshire is within easy reach of all four London airports. Past participants suggest that Hertfordshire offers the best of both worlds - an attractive, safe campus location, with the attractions of the U.K.’s capital on your doorstep.

Student Life
At Hertfordshire, students can enjoy a pleasant countryside location that offers first rate, well-equipped learning resource centers, laboratories, studios and classrooms. Social life is an integral part of the Hertfordshire experience. The University offers a variety of local entertainment, clubs, restaurants, shopping and galleries. Hertfordshire offers some of the best university-based sporting and fitness facilities in the UK. Students can choose to participate in a wide-range of student clubs, play competitive or social sports, or take advantage of the university’s excellent health, fitness and swimming facilities.

Academic Details

Students accepted into the UNC Wilmington exchange/study abroad program with Hertfordshire will receive credit toward their degree requirements for most majors. They offer a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in the areas of business, biology, computer science, economics, English, environmental management, film studies, foreign languages, geography, history, journalism, math, music, philosophy, and psychology. UNCW and UH also share a special exchange between business faculties as part of the Transatlantic Business School Alliance (TABSA). UH offers a wide array of business courses and offers exchange opportunities for one semester, one academic year as well as a two-year dual-degree program for CSB students (contact Dr. Hill for  academic details).


Most UNCW students live in single rooms in university residences equipped with kitchens. These are usually located within a five to ten minute walk from classes. Meals are also available in inexpensive student cafeterias. Your floor-mates may be U.K. students or international students.

Program Cost
This program is available as an Exchange or as a Study Abroad: 

  • Exchange - This means you pay your regular tuition and fees to UNCW, and your room and board costs abroad.
  • Study Abroad - This means you pay your tuition, fees, room and board abroad. 

With each option, there will be additional costs for international airfare, passport, visa, health insurance, and local transportation. Please meet with an advisor at the Office of International Programs to discuss which option is best for you. 

Financial Aid and Scholarships
Federal and state financial aid may be applied towards this program. Even if you are normally ineligible for financial aid, you should submit a financial aid application (FAFSA). You may find that you are eligible for additional funding.
