Program Description

The University
Founded in 1927, the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) is noted for its excellence in academics and scientific work. Widely recognized as one of the most important universities in Brazil, UFMG emphasizes performance in teaching, research, and outreach. This institution will immerse students in social inclusion, teaching them with applied, hands-on learning. UFMG continues to cultivate and provide opportunities to network through their large number of programs and focused studies.

The Surrounding Area
Belo Horizonte, the first wholly planned city in Brazil, is the capital of Minas Gerais. The city is ringed by the Serra do Curral mountain range, which provides a natural boundary. Apart from enjoying the renowned hospitality of the people of Belo Horizonte and the excellent Mineiran cuisine, visitors can explore the city’s beautiful squares, museums and parks, such as the Prac¸a do Papa and the Parque Municipal. The climate is mild, with temperatures ranging between 16 and 31 degrees Celsius, the average being 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Winters are dry and summers rainy. Belo Horizonte has a rich and dynamic cultural life. Experience first-hand the Museu de Artes e Ofícios and various festivals and competitions. In the historic cities of Minas Gerais you will be able to appreciate a lavish abundance of baroque architecture. The paths, springs, rivers and waterfalls in the surrounding countryside are ideal for the ecotourist.

Student Life
